Last night my daughter asked me, “Dad… why do you stay up so late? Why don’t you talk like you used to? Why are you so impatient?” “I’ve had a lot to do, sweetheart,” I said. “But it’ll be all right.” She asked, “Would it help if I stopped taking dance lessons and eating sushi and spent less money?” A lump filled my throat. I said, “I’m doing this so that one day, when all the girls of Iran dance, their fathers can watch and cheer them on. “So I can hold my head high and say I was a passenger on the train of Iran’s national revolution.” She watched me. I hugged her and said, “I’m so glad I’ve raised an Iranian daughter with such spirit…” Then she gave me the best gift in the world. “Dad,” she said. “Yes, sweetheart?” “Long live the Shah!” She said, “When we go to Iran, I’ll teach all the little girls to dance myself.”
