Today I was reading about Enver Hoxha, one of history's most notorious dictators. He ruled Albania for more than forty years under a communist government, leaving bloodshed, repression, and executions behind him. It was Albania, decades ago. Yet at moments I felt I was reading about Khomeini and Khamenei. The resemblance struck me: so much violence. I came away believing that religious ideology, particularly Shia Islam, bears an unsettling resemblance to communism. To me, both were created for crimes against humanity. I am not saying that our lives are identical to those of Albanians. I see patterns shared by people living under dictatorships, and in the downfall of those regimes.
